True orthodontic emergencies are extremely rare, but sometimes, problems do come up during treatment. Many problems with your orthodontic treatment can be solved at home, so you can use this page as a guide for understanding what you can fix at home and what deserves immediate medical attention. In every case, we encourage you to call us if you experience a problem and have any questions on what to do.

Lost Separator

Losing a separator during treatment is exceedingly common, and it’s usually nothing to worry about. Just give us a call to find out if you’ll need to have the separator replaced.

Sore Teeth or Discomfort During Treatment

When you first get braces, have them adjusted, or start with a new set of Invisalign aligners, it’s common to go through an “adjustment period,” during which your teeth and gums may feel sore for a few days. This is normal and nothing to worry about, and if the pain is irritating, you can use over the counter pain relievers to quell it. You may also gargle lukewarm saltwater or use a warm washcloth or heating pad over the area to relieve soreness. If the pain doesn’t go away or gets worse, call us to discuss the matter.

Irritating Wires

If a wire is irritating you, you can move it away from the area with a cotton swab or the eraser of a pencil. You can also try covering it with a piece of dental wax. If it’s extremely painful, you can cut it with a pair of sterilized nail clippers – just be sure to call us immediately if you do.

Loose Bracket

If a bracket comes loose, call us right away to see if we need to re-fit it. If you have to cut a wire and the bracket slides off, be sure to keep the bracket and call our office immediately to schedule a repair appointment.

Headgear Problems

If headgear is causing pain, it’s probably because you’re not wearing it quite long enough. Be extra diligent about wearing the headgear for the amount of time instructed and the pain should subside. If your facebow is bent, call go ahead and call us to set up an adjustment appointment – never try to adjust it yourself.
